List of Governors of South Dakota


The Governor of South Dakota is the chief executive of the U.S. state of South Dakota. The current Governor is Dennis Daugaard. The Governor has the power to sign or veto laws, and to call the Legislative Assembly into emergency session. He has an ex officio North Dakota Governor's Residence. The governor may only serve two terms consecutively, and becomes eligible for reelection after four years out of office.

As of January 2017, there were three former U.S. governors of South Dakota still alive, the oldest U.S. governor of South Dakota being Frank Farrar (served 1969–1971, born 1929). The most recent U.S. governor of South Dakota to die was Walter Dale Miller (served 1993–1995, born 1925), on September 28, 2015. The most recently serving governor to die was Bill Janklow (served 1979-1987 and 1995-2003, born 1939) on January 12, 2012.
