Their first honour in the English league system was the Southern Football League Second Division title the following year in the 1912–13 season. The club entered the Football League in 1920 and enjoyed the most successful period in their history, finishing as First Division runners-up in the 1923–24 season and reaching two FA Cup finals, losing the first in 1925 before becoming the first and, to date, only non-English side to win the cup two years later in 1927, defeating Arsenal 1–0. The club reached their third FA Cup final 82 years later, in 2008.
