Lionel Tarassenko


Professor Lionel Tarassenko CBE FREngFMedSci has been the holder of the Chair in Electrical Engineering at the University of Oxford since 1997, and is most noted for his work on the applications of neural networks. He led the development of the Sharp LogiCook, the first microwave oven to incorporate neural networks.

Born in Paris in 1957, Tarassenko studied at Keble College, Oxford. He was elected to a Fellowship of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) in 1996, and to a Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2000. He is a Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, and is a practising Christian.

Tarassenko presented the 2012 Woolmer Lecture of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. He was invited to the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2014 to talk about digital health.

He is married to Lady Ann, née Craven, younger daughter of William Craven, 6th Earl of Craven.
