It was filed on January 12, 2016 by Head of Government of Mexico City Miguel Ángel Mancera in the east courtyard of the Old City Hall, with Alfredo Castillo, director general of the CONADE and Horacio de la Vega Flores, director of the capital's Institute of Sport.
The first game was played February 21, and the championship game, called the Tazón México (Mexico Bowl), was on April 10. All matches were played at the Estadio Jesús Martínez "Palillo" of Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City.
On September 28, 2016 the LFA announced two new teams, the Fundidores and the Dinos, which will participate in the 2017 season. The Fundidores will play at the Estadio Tecnológico with Dinos' home ground the Estadio Olímpico Francisco I. Madero.
