Leuconotopicus is a genus of woodpeckers in the family Picidae native to North and South America. Species in this genus were previously assigned to Picoides. Some taxonomic authorities, including the American Ornithological Society, continue to place the entire group there.
The name of the genus was introduced by the French ornithologist Alfred Malherbe in 1845. The word Leuconotopicus is from the Greek leukos meaning white, nōton back and pikos woodpecker.
