La Vergne High School opened in 1988 in response to the population explosion in North Rutherford County. Smyrna High School had been the only high school serving this area for approximately 40 years, and its overcrowding was the catalyst leading to the building of two new high schools: The new Smyrna High School next to Lee Victory Pkwy, and La Vergne High School on Wolverine Trail.

La Vergne High school serves the community that shares its name.

The Wolverine's bowling team is coached by Matt Jackson, who was named Coach of the Year in 2012 by the Daily News Journal. It is quite well known by its many achievements. In 2011, the girls won against Blackman High School in the Regionals for District 7, while the boys placed 2nd against Smyrna High School. Sisters, Keysha and Kylah Martin, both qualified for the TSAA Division I Individual State Tournament representing Rutherford County. By the end of the tournament, Keysha took the title and became the first female in Rutherford County to ever win the title. Lavergne is also the winner of the county track meet for 15 straight years and has been represented in the state track meet since 1994.
