Klaus Heissler is a fictional character from the animated television series American Dad!, voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. He is the Smith family's hapless and goldfish.

Klaus Heissler is the family's attention-starved, hapless, pet goldfish. He is consultative and full of sage advice, sometimes even taking on a scholarly appearance and wearing reading glasses. Klaus is actually a man in a fish body. He was once an East German Olympic ski-jumper until his brain and presumably vocal cords were transferred into the body of a goldfish. The CIA did this to Klaus at the 1986 Winter Olympics to prevent him from winning the gold medal. This has resulted in Klaus becoming permanently trapped in the body of a goldfish, leaving him at times discontented and gloomy. Not confined to his fishbowl, he is often seen scooting himself about the Smith residence, reclined in a glass of water. In these moments, it is only his very lower back that is actually in the water. In the early part of the series, Klaus had an obsessive crush on Francine and often made sexual advances towards her. The Smith family and particularly Roger have been shown to treat Klaus with disdain. Ironically, Klaus started out in the series as a bully, known for his ridicule and cruel teasing of all the show's main characters, particularly Roger. As Roger took on more cruel and brazen behaviors, however, this became lessened.

Klaus still hasn't come to terms with what happened, at times malcontent and gloomy. For much of the series discounting its beginnings, the Smith family and particularly Roger have been shown to treat Klaus with disdain, take him for granted, and even mistreat him. Ironically, Klaus started out on the series as a bully, known for his ridicule and cruel teasing of all the show's main characters, particularly Roger.
