The line opened on 18 December 1932, operating between Kisuki and Izumo Minari. This was extended northward to Shinji on 1 August 1934, and southward to Yakawa on 20 November 1934, with the entire line between Shinji and Bingo Ochiai completed on 12 December 1937, including a switch-back at Izumo Sakane.

With the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the line was transferred to the control of JR West.
