Kate (clan)

Kate (काटे) is a sub-clan of the Phatak or Mohite Maratha clans, found largely in Maharashtra and neighbouring states of India.

Kates origin is related to Maratha history. There are two types of Kate in the Marathas viz. Kate from Mohite Clan, Kate from Phatak clan and Kate descended through King Dorik of Chittorgarh, rendered as Sisodiyan Kate who is brother branch of Bhosale, Bhoite, Ghorpade, Kharade and their subclans never marry among themselves because they descended through Raghuvanshi Rajputs with worship of the same Devak(Totem).

Kate is associated with service under the Muslim Sultanate of Deccan and they also contributed to expansion of the Maratha Empire in India.

King Shivaji's father, Sardar Shahaji rao Bhosale, Jadavs of Sindkhed, Nimbalkar, Ghorpade, and other clans affected Maratha politics in the Pre-Shivaji Era, along with Srimant Bapuji (Babaji) Rao, a Kate nobleman from this clan.
