On 31 August 2012, Ferdinand signed for Peterborough United on a four-year deal for an initial fee of £200,000, which could rise to £500,000. He went on to play 33 times for Posh in the Championship during the 2012–13 season, scoring once – the winning goal in a 1–0 victory at Blackpool on 16 March 2013. Peterborough were relegated to League One on the last day of the season, and Ferdinand fell out of first-team contention.
