Mario (Japanese: マリオ, Hepburn: Mario, [ma.ɾʲi.o]) (English: /ˈmɑːrioʊ/; Italian: [ˈmaːrjo]) is an Italian plumber and the main protagonist of the series who was introduced in 1981.

Luigi (Japanese: ルイージ, Hepburn: Ruīji, [ɾɯ.iː.dʑi̥]) (English: /luːˈiːdʒi/; Italian: [luˈiːdʒi]) is Mario's twin brother and is also a plumber. He is the official 'Player 2' of the series.
