Coronation Street is a British soap opera first broadcast on 9 December 1960. The following is a list of characters introduced in 2016, by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by series producer Stuart Blackburn, or his successor Kate Oates. Marta Zarek (Edyta Budnik) arrived in February, igniting a child slavery storyline, as did Alya Nazir's (Sair Khan) best friend, Rana Habeeb (Bhavna Limbachia). In March, Freddie Smith (Derek Griffiths) was introduced as a new friend for Kylie Platt (Paula Lane). He was followed by the birth of Callum Logan (Sean Ward) and Sarah Platt's (Tina O'Brien) baby son, Harry, as well as Michelle Connor's (Kym Marsh) childhood lover, Will Chatterton (Leon Ockenden). Pablo Duarte (Shai Matheson) made his first appearance in April, as the homosexual husband of Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon). July saw the introduction of murderous teenager Clayton Hibbs (Callum Harrison), followed by an acquaintance of Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre), Vinny Ashford (Ian Kelsey), and Sonia Rahman (Sudha Bhuchar), a family friend of the Nazirs, in August. Seb Franklin (Harry Visinoni), the boyfriend of Faye Windass (Ellie Leach), first appeared in October. December saw many new arrivals, including troubled Shona Ramsey (Julia Goulding) who would become involved in a storyline with David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd), Nathan Curtis (Christopher Harper) and his assistant Mel Maguire (Sonia Ibrahim), which began the child grooming and sexual exploitation storyline involving Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon), and Mary Taylor's (Patti Clare) long-lost son Jude Appleton (Paddy Wallace).
