Josh Kaufman (born May 26, 1978) is a musician, songwriter and producer living in Brooklyn, NY. Best known for his work with The National, Bob Weir, Josh Ritter,Dawn Landes, Trixie Whitley and Craig Finn. He has also been a frequent collaborator in many projects/bands over the past decade including: Yellowbirds, The Poison Tree, A Nero, Rocketship Park, Balthrop, Alabama, Higgins and a host of others.
Born in Patterson, New Jersey, and raised in Stony Brook, Long Island, Kaufman taught himself guitar and played in bands as a teenager. He lived in Madrid, Spain for most of tenth grade where he became good friends with Interpol's Paul Banks while attending ASM(The American School of Madrid). The two played "ambient guitar" behind a school production of The Lottery. It was Josh's "1st gig". He went on to study music formally at SUNY New Paltz, NY in the late 90s where he continued to play in bands and make 4-track recordings w/ his friends. After graduation Kaufman moved to Brooklyn, NY and found work as a touring sideman, barista and printmaker. He married his longtime girlfriend, musician Annie Nero, in 2010. Annie gave birth to their daughter, Clarabelle Esme Kaufman, on May 10, 2014.
