Jose b. Hanina

Jose b. Hanina (Hebrew: רבי יוסי בר חנינא‎‎, read as Rabbi Yossi bar Hanina) was a Jewish Amora sage of the Land of Israel, from the second generation of the Amoraim. He was a disciple of R. Yochanan bar Nafcha, and served as a 'Dayan,' religious Judge.

Jose b. Hanina was ordained as a Rabbi by his own Rabbi—Yochanan bar Nafcha. and became a "Gadol Ba-Torah", an erudite Torah scholar sage. Later he became a "Talmid Haver", a colleague-disciple, to Yochanan bar Nafcha, and even disputed and debated him in Halakha matters. This is how he also got to know R. Shimon ben Lakish and R. Eleazar ben Pedat, whom he also disputed and debated in Halakhic matters. The Talmud cites him many times, and one can also find other Amora sages who delivered, in his name, Halkhaic statements. Among them, R. Abbahu and R. Hamma b. Ukba. In some other additional references, one can find R. Jose b. Hanina engaged in Aggadic statements, and not only Halakha matters.
