The John Courtney Murray Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Catholic Theological Society of America, named after John Courtney Murray, the great American theologian known for his work on religious liberty.
Many recipients of the award have been criticized by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith or US Bishops' Conference Committee on Doctrine, including Richard McBrien,Elizabeth Johnson,Peter Phan,Margaret Farley. and Charles Curran. The main reason for the criticism was an alleged lack of conformity to the fullness of Catholic orthodoxy.
