John Barton FBA (born 17 June 1948) is Oriel and Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture, Emeritus at Oxford University, a Chair which he held from 1991, and is Emeritus Fellow of Oriel College, both as of 2014; as well, he has been an ordained and serving priest in the Church of England since 1973. His research interests and extensive publications have been in the areas of the Old Testament prophets, the biblical canon, biblical interpretation, and Old Testament theology, with his latest efforts, from 2010-2013, on Ethics in Ancient Israel funded by a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship. Barton is a foreign member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 2007. As of 2013, he continued to assist in services and other activities in the parish of Abingdon, in which he resides.

Barton's degrees from Oxford are an MA, D. Phil. and D. Litt..

Following receipt of his degrees, he served as a Junior Research Fellow Merton College (1973-1974).

John Barton is Oriel and Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture, Emeritus at Oxford University and an Emeritus Fellow of Oriel College, as of 2014. After his position as a Junior Fellow at Merton (see above), Barton held the successive Oxford positions of University Lecturer in Theology (Old Testament; 1974-1989) and Reader in Biblical Studies (1989-1991), before being named to the Oriel and Laing Chair in 1991.
