Johan Jeremiassen

Johan Jeremiassen (born 8 January 1843 in Hviteseid, died 25 January 1889) was a Norwegian ship-owner, consul and politician. He established the Porsgrund Porselænsfabrik (a porcelain maker).

Johan Jeremiassen was born in Hviteseid to teacher's seminary leader Knut Johan Jeremiassen and Ingeborg Ellse, née Helseth. The family moved to Drammen around 1855. Johan moved to Kristiania in the 1860s, where he made a career in manufacturing, and later to Porsgrund in 1872 to become involved in shipping. His brother Herman Jeremiassen moved with him and became a businessperson, as well as mayor.

In 1870 Johan Jeremiassen married Serine, sister of later mayor Jørgen Christian and later Prime Minister Gunnar Knudsen. Johan and Serine had one son Christian Jeremiassen Reim, born 1873.

Serine Jeremiassen was elected as one of the first women to serve in Porsgrund municipal council, representing a temperance group Afholdsvennenes Liste, in 1907.

Jeremiassen was a notable ship-owner. In 1885 he took the initiative to establishing Porsgrund Porselænsfabrik. He was also the German consul for Skiensfjorden.

Jeremiassen was vice mayor of Porsgrund municipality from 1885 to 1888.
