Joseph Dave "Joe" Gomez (born 23 May 1997) is an English professional footballer who plays for Premier League club Liverpool. Gomez prefers to play as a centre-back but can also play as a full-back on either side.
He began his career at Charlton Athletic, breaking into the first team at 17 and playing one full senior season before joining Liverpool in June 2015. Gomez has represented England up to under-21 level and played every minute of every game when England won the 2014 UEFA European U-17 Championship.
Gomez was born in Catford, London to a Gambian father, Gus and English mother, Linda, who is also of Spanish descent. He graduated through the academy at nearby Charlton Athletic, making his debut for the club's Under-18 side at just 13 years old. Despite strong interest from numerous other clubs, Gomez signed his first professional deal with the Addicks in 2014. His senior debut came in a 4–0 League Cup victory over Colchester United at The Valley on 12 August 2014, playing the full 90 minutes as the right back. A week later he made his league debut in a 3–2 home win against Derby County in the Championship. Gomez went on to make 24 appearances during his first season including 18 starts, both at right back and in his preferred position of centre back.
