João Vieira is an important sea turtle nesting island in the Bijagós Archipelago of Guinea-Bissau. It is also a centre for sea fishing and is the centre of the João Vieira and Poilão Marine National Park. Nearby islets includes Meio (not to confuse with Maio which is in the north), Cavalos to the west and Roxa/Canhabaque to the northwest. The mainland of Guinea-Bissau and Africa are to the northeast.
