Jethva

Jethwa (or Jethva, Jaitwa, Jethi or Kamari, Camari, Kam(a)r) is a Rajput clan. They are a branch of the Suryavanshi Rajput clan.

The historical origin of Jethwas is uncertain. It has been suggested that the Saindhava dynasty ruling eastern part of Saurashtra peninsula is now represented by the Jethwas. It is also suggested that the term Jethwa probably originating from Jayadratha (another name of Saindhawa dynasty), Jyeshtha (the elder branch) or Jyeshthuka from which the region derived its name Jyeshthukadesha.

Colonial writers, Harold Wilberforce-Bell and Wilson, had considered their origin from the Indo-Scythians from north. Gaurishankar Oza had mentioned them as a branch of Pratihara of Kannauj. According to bardic tales, Ghumli was under Shil Kumar Jethwa in 7th century who had married a daughter of Anangpal, the Tomara of Delhi as a reward of his military service.

They claim descent from Makardhwaja, son of Hanuman, who appears in the epic Ramayana.

The Jethwas may have a close connection with Mer people since early times who has always been subordinate to them.

It is certain that they had entered Saurashtra and established themselves at Morvi (now Morbi) in the ninth century. They spread westward and captured Dwarka from the Chavdas, moved further and captured lands between Barda hills and the Arabian Sea. During the time of Mahmud of Ghazni, the Jethwas controlled all the west and north of the Saurashta peninsula.

Sangaji (r. 1120-1150) who defeated the army of Virdhaval of Vaghela dynasty near Morbi in 1125 and married his daughter. The Jethwas lost Morbi when they were defeated by the army of Qutb al-Din Aibak in 1193. Thus they shifted their capital to Nagnah and then to Shrinagar and finally to Ghumli.
