Jesse Arreguin (born 1984) is the mayor of Berkeley, California. He was elected in the general election of November 8, 2016, to a four-year term. Arreguin described himself as an "unapologetic progressive". He was sworn in as mayor on December 1, 2016. At age 32, Arreguin became the youngest elected mayor in Berkeley's history.
From 2008 to 2016, Arreguin had served as a Berkeley City Council member. He drafted and passed over 300 pieces of legislation, including expanded affordable housing throughout Berkeley, establishing a higher minimum wage, environmental protections, and saving the historic Main Post Office.
Arreguin was elected to the Rent Stabilization Board in 2004, and served as chair through 2008. He also served on other boards and commissions, including the Downtown Area Plan Advisory Committee. He was also a Boardmember of the local Sierra Club.
Arreguin has participated in Black Lives Matter protests and the Occupy Movement. On March 28, 2017, he officially called for the impeachment of President Trump. On April 21, 2017, Breitbart and The Daily Caller alleged that he was a member of the Facebook group, BAMN (By Any Means Necessary). He thereupon removed himself from the group and condemned BAMN's "violent actions", saying, "On social media, following or liking pages does not mean you support what that group is doing".
