Jan Drda


Jan Drda (April 4, 1915– November 28, 1970) was a Czech prose writer and playwright.

He was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia from 1945. From 1949 to 1956, he was Chairman of the communist-controlled Union of Czechoslovak Writers.

He is best known for his book Němá barikáda (Silent Barricade, 1946), which presents the Prague Uprising against the Nazis in May 1945. The 1987 film Princess Jasnenka and the Flying Shoemaker is based on his story.
