James J. Phillips

James J. "Jim" Phillips is the current Athletic Director for Northwestern University.

James J. "Jim" Phillips was born and grew up in the suburb of Portage Park, in Chicago, and is one of 10 children.

Phillips graduated from the University of Illinois in 1990, and worked as a manager in their athletic department. He earned a master's degree from Arizona State University and was an assistant basketball coach. In 2007, he completed his Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Tennessee, and served as an assistant athletic director there until 2000. After that, he went to the University of Notre Dame , where he became assistant athletic director. He was hired as athletic director at Northwestern on April 14, 2008.

Phillips and his wife, Laura, have five children: Luke, Madeleine, Meredith, John, and James.

Phillips officially became Northwestern's 21st Athletic Director on April 14, 2008.
