Jaffna Hindu College (Tamil: யாழ்ப்பாணம் இந்துக் கல்லூரி Yāḻppāṇam Intuk Kallūri, JHC) is a national school in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1886 by a group of Hindu people who wanted an English language alternative to the Christian missionary schools.
In the late 19th century all the English language schools in the area were run by Christian missionaries.
In 1886 Williams Nevins Muthukumaru Sithamparapillai founded The Native Town High School. The school encountered financial problems and in 1889 it was taken over by S. Nagalingam who re-located it to Vananarponnai. The school was renamed Nagalingam Town High School.
Mudaliyar P. Coomaraswamy who was the president of the Jaffna Saiva (Samaya) Paripalana Sabhai realised the importance of having a Hindu education system based boys school in Jaffna. The latter with the help of few other leading citizens of Jaffna under the "Saiva Pripala Sabai" started the school which later came to be known as the "Jaffna Hindu College"
The Sabhai originally named the Institute "the Hindu High School" and entrusted the management to a sub-committee of six members consisting of President Justice Mr. Chellappapillai, Vice-President Mr. S. Nagalimgam Secretary Mr. V. Casipillai, Treasurer Mr. Pasupathy Chettiar, Committee members Mr. A. Sabapathy and Mr. S. Kailasapillai. Mr. Casipillai proposed that Mr. Nagalimgam be appointed the Manager and the proposal was unanimously carried. Thus Mr. Nagalimgam came to be the founder manager. Mr. Nagalingam held this prerogative position till his death on 04.08.1897 when the Management devolved on Mr. Casipillai.
The Treasurer Mr. Pasupathy Chettiar persuaded one Marimuthu Upathiyayar to sell the land, where the permanent building now stands, to the sabhai at a nominal price. A pandal was erected at this site to receive Sir Ponnampalam Ramanathan on his visit to Jaffna.
It was at this pandal erected to receive Sir Ponnampalam Ramanathan; the Hindu English School had its first session on Vajayadasami Day.
