The following is a list of characters that first appeared in the New Zealand soap opera Shortland Street in 2014, by order of first appearance.

Honour Aleni first appeared in February 2014, portrayed by Sophie McIntosh.

Toby (Robert Evison) quickly grew a crush on Honour but it was clear she was infatuated with his best friend Kane (KJ Apa). However, due to her heavily religious father Sam (Rene Naufahu), Honour was reluctant to date but eventually talked round Kane, only to be cyber bullied by a jealous Harry Warner (Reid Walker). Honour departed Ferndale after being attacked by the deranged Brett Franklin (Matt Dwyer) but returned several months later when she moved into Ula's (Frankie Adams) flat and began to date Kane once again. However, when Honour and Kane started sleeping together, she became rebellious and fell out with Ula. Ultimately she was sent back to live with Sam out of Ferndale.

Jack Theodore Hannah first appeared in early 2014 as a minor character, before becoming a more central character later in the year. In 2015 the character was introduced to the core cast and a family unit was created around him.

Jack was the captain of the Ferndale High rugby squad and quickly became friends with new student Kane Jenkins (KJ Apa) but fell out with his friend Toby Reynolds (Robert Evison). Jack supported Kane through his depression but it soon became clear it was more than friendship when Jack tried to kiss Kane and the two fell out. Jack began to bully Kane but ultimately the two reconciled and Jack came out as gay to his friends and family. The following year Jack began to date his homework tutor Edwin (Maxwell Apse) and subsequently struggled with his father Mo's (Jarod Rawiri) uneasiness with the same-sex relationship. The relationship was short lived however the academic help enabled Jack to continue in his pursuit to study medicine. After Jack graduated in high school, he was saved from prison for possession of cannabis by Curtis, who took the fall for him and Cam. Cam convinced Sass to help Jack start his medicine scholarship, and later Cam and Jack started a relationship, much to the chagrin of Mo again, but due to Cam getting away with jail. In his first week of university studies, he helped to save a man with a cardiac arrest in the IV bar, however, he had a second heart attack en route to hospital and died when he arrived at the hospital. Cam breaks up with Jack. During this time Jack develops a friendship with another gay classmate named Charlie. Cam departs and rejects an attempt at romance by Charlie. However, Charlie eventually convinces Jack that the two should date casually. The two go to parties together and study for med school exams. He later finds out Charlie is using Ritalin to stay awake and cram for exams and is upset by this because of how drugs affected his brother Curtis and how his father would react. Jack eventually buckles under the pressure and use a pill or two himself. His step mother sees this and forced Jack to break up with Charlie or she will tell Mo. Jack agrees, but Charlie convinces Jack to continue seeing him in secret.
