J. Peter Burkholder


J. Peter Burkholder (June 17, 1954 – ) is an American musicologist and author. His research interests include twentieth-century music, Charles Ives, musical borrowing, American music, analysis, and music history pedagogy. He is the co-author of A History of Western Music. 9th Edition, with Donald Jay Grout and Claude V. Palisca published by W. W. Norton & Company. He has authored numerous monographs, essays, and journal articles. He is widely held in libraries.

Burkholder attended Earlham College and The University of Chicago, where he received his Ph.D. in Musicology in 1983 with Robert P. Morgan and Howard Mayer Brown. He began his teaching career at the University of Wisconsin before moving to Indiana University, where he has taught since 1988 and now holds the rank of Distinguished Professor. Burkholder has served as president, vice-president, and director-at-large for the American Musicological Society, which twice awarded him the Alfred Einstein award and named him Honorary Member in 2010. He has also served as president of the Charles Ives Society and as a board member of the College Music Society. Additional honors include two Irving Lowens Awards from the Society for American Music, two Deems Taylor Awards from ASCAP, and numerous fellowships.

In recent years Burkholder has been very involved with the publication of A History of Western Music and the corresponding Norton Anthology of Western Music, both authored by Donald Jay Grout and later revised by Claude V. Palisca. He wrote a Study and Listening Guide for the Fifth Edition in 1996 and took on the task of revising the book and anthologies with the Seventh Edition published in 2006. A History of Western Music is the leading English-language general survey of music history used at colleges and universities in the United States.
