Iron Chef Gauntlet is a limited-run series on the Food Network that began airing on April 16, 2017. The series is a reboot of the Iron Chef and Iron Chef America series that gained popularity on Food Network and is hosted by Alton Brown, who also takes over as the series' Chairman. Seven chefs from around the country battle each other in an elimination contest, with the last chef remaining then facing a "gauntlet" challenge of defeating three Iron Chefs — Bobby Flay, Masaharu Morimoto and Michael Symon — in order to earn the title of Iron Chef.
Each regular episode consists of two challenges. The first is the Chairman's Challenge, where Alton Brown announces a theme and all chefs must cook a dish in that theme to be judged by Brown. The winner of the Chairman's Challenge automatically is safe, advances to next week, and gets to select any other chef to be one of two chefs competing in the second challenge. The loser of the Chairman's Challenge is automatically entered into the second challenge, the Secret Ingredient Showdown. In this challenge, the two chefs have one hour to prepare three dishes featuring the secret ingredient. The dishes are then judged by two judges. A total of 20 points are available from each judge: ten for taste, five for plating, and five for originality. The chef with the lowest overall combined score is eliminated.
Once the eliminations are completed and one chef remains, that chef will compete in a special contest where he or she must cook against the three Iron Chefs. Only if the contestant is able to defeat all three Iron Chefs can they then claim the title of Iron Chef. If the chef fails to defeat the three Iron Chefs, there will be no new Iron Chef named.
The series was preceded by the special episode "The Legend of Iron Chef", an overview of Iron Chef, Iron Chef America and The Next Iron Chef on Food Network, with Alton Brown reviewing key aspects and highlights from the shows. It also previewed Iron Chef Gauntlet and Alton Brown's new role in the new show.
