Howell Township is a civil township of Livingston County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,679 at the 2000 census. The City of Howell is administratively autonomous and has incorporated within the southeastern portion of the township, taking approximately 3 sq mi (7.8 km2) of land.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 31.9 square miles (83 km2), of which 31.7 square miles (82 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (0.50%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,679 people, 1,902 households, and 1,565 families residing in the township. The population density was 179.0 per square mile (69.1/km²). There were 1,993 housing units at an average density of 62.8 per square mile (24.3/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.75% White, 0.18% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.07% of the population.

There were 1,902 households out of which 40.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.7% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% were non-families. 13.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.20.
