Howard S. Sheehy, Jr.


Howard Sherman ("Bud") Sheehy Jr. was a member of the First Presidency of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS Church) from 1978 to 2000. Sheehy was also an apostle and a member of the church's Council of Twelve Apostles from 1968 to 1978.

Sheehy was born in Denver, Colorado, and became a full-time minister of the RLDS Church in 1960. On April 1, 1968, church president W. Wallace Smith selected Sheehy as a member of the church's Council of Twelve Apostles. On April 3, 1978, Wallace B. Smith succeeded his father as church president and selected Sheehy and Duane E. Couey as his counselors.

On April 15, 1996, when Smith retired as church president and was succeeded by W. Grant McMurray, Sheehy was retained by McMurray as a counselor in the First Presidency.Kenneth N. Robinson was selected as McMurray's other counselor. Sheehy was a member of the First Presidency that made the decision to change the name of the church to Community of Christ in 2000.

Sheehy retired from full-time church service in 2000 and was replaced in the First Presidency by Peter A. Judd.

Sheehy earned degrees from Graceland University, Central Missouri State University, and the University of Kansas and was a lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve.
