Horseback riding

Equestrianism (from Latin equester, equestr-, equus, horseman, horse), more often known as riding, horseback riding (American English) or horse riding (British English), refers to the skill of riding, driving, steeplechasing or vaulting with horse. This broad description includes the use of horses for practical working purposes, transportation, recreational activities, artistic or cultural exercises, and competitive sport.

For centuries, horses have been trained and ridden for practical working purposes such as controlling herd animals on a ranch.

These animals are also used in competitive sports which can be grouped in the following three sections: English riding, western riding, and horse racing. These sections include, but are not limited to, dressage, endurance riding, eventing, reining, show jumping, tent pegging, vaulting, polo, horse racing, driving, and rodeo. A more in-depth description of these sections can be found further down the page. Within this category of uses for horses, these animals can also be used for therapeutic purposes, both in specialized paraequestrian competition as well as non-competitive riding to improve human health and emotional development..

Some more non-competitive riding activities that horses (and other equids such as mules and donkeys) can be used for are fox hunting, trail riding or hacking. Trail riding can be considered to be the most popular and well-known of these recreational activities since it can be found in almost every part of the world within parks, ranches, and public stables.
