Hivjufossen


Hivjufossen is a 250 meters high waterfall in Hovet, Buskerud in Norway. Some kilometers from the centre of the village Hovet, direction Aurland, is a hike-track to the Hivjufossen. De majestic waterfall is a tourist attraction and can only be reached after 40 till 60 minutes climbing. The waterfall is created by the water of the river Hivju, that streams from national park Hardangervidda to national park Hallingskarvet into the direction of the river Storåne, in Hovet.

The waterfall came in the news when on August 3, 2007 a Dutchman (50) accidentally fell into the waterfall and was found dead some days later. The first deadly accident took place in 1991. The victim was a Norwegian woman (44). The third victim was an American (52). The fatal fall happened on 24 juli 2016. On August 3, 2016 the corps was found. Magne Holestøl, local guide and member of the rescue team in 1991, experienced travel guide of tourists who visit the Hivjufossen, stated in the NRK article "Ikke trygt for turister" in the provincial newspaper "NRK Buskerud" : "The Hivjufossen is not safe for tourists."

There is a parking place on the left side, after passing the bridge. From there is a path to the start of the hiking track, a hundred meters into the direction of Hovet, on the other side of FV50.
