Hinton Township is a civil township of Mecosta County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 1,035. John Hinton was the first white settler here in 1855. The township was named for him when it was organized in 1860. A post office named Hinton operated from July 1862 until October 1863.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.7 square miles (92 km2), of which 35.7 square miles (92 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.06%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,035 people, 372 households, and 287 families residing in the township. The population density was 29.0 per square mile (11.2/km²). There were 424 housing units at an average density of 11.9 per square mile (4.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.71% White, 0.10% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.77% from other races, and 1.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.74% of the population.
There were 372 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.5% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.15.
