Hillwood offers all levels of academics. Standard and honors level courses are available along with Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses. Additionally, the AVID (meaning Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is available. Hillwood is a Technology Site Demonstration school.

There are many sports available for students to participate in. The Topper Athletic Club (TAC) is a parent/faculty organization that helps support all sports teams. They generally meet once a month. All sporting events are overseen by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). Hillwood has had moderate success in athletics.

Sports at HHS include:

The football team was state championship contender in the 1990s and early 2000s under coach Jerry Link before their move from AAAA (4A) to AAAAA (5A), which was Tennessee's highest class. Now there are six classes and Hillwood is in 4A. The football team is currently coached by Kurt Page, who was previously coached at Father Ryan and won a state championship with the Irish in 1999. Prior to coaching, he was the starting quarterback at Vanderbilt University. He has led Hillwood back to the state playoffs for the first time since 2004 with a 5-5 record.

The wrestling team is known for their dominance in the 1970s under famed coach G. P. West, for whom the G. P. West Bruin Invitational is named, as well as its many State Champions and the Hillwood Invitational. Also the wrestling team had a great run in the mid-1990s under Al Posnack. His best year was the 1994-1995 campaign with a 13-1 record. The program was restarted by Jody Duncan in 2009-2010. He was a state runner up for Nashville Christian at 189 lbs.

The baseball team accumulated Hillwood's first state championship in any sport when they won the TSSAA AAA state championship over Maryville High School in 1977. William Brennan, who would later be a Major League pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs, played for Hillwood in 1981.
