It appeared on his album Matthew and Son (having been recorded by Stevens on 1st February 1967) before it was popularized by the Tremeloes as a hit single only months later, having been released by the Tremeloes in January 1967.
The song, minus the final verse, was covered by The Tremeloes, whose version was a No. 4 hit in the UK Singles Chart and a No. 13 hit in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967.Yo La Tengo covered the song on their 1990 album, Fakebook. It was also covered by The Mavericks, whose version peaked at number 42 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in 1999.Turin Brakes released their cover version as a B-side to their single, "Something In My Eye".
