Herbert Joos (March 21, 1940 in Karlsruhe) is a German jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and graphic designer.
Joos learned trumpet first by self-study and then by a private teacher. he studied double bass from 1958, but then, he turned to flugelhorn, baritone horn, mellophone, and alphorn. Since middle of 60s, he has been a member of Modern Jazz quintet Karlsruhe, which the group Fourmenonly was created from (with Wilfried Eichhorn and Rudolf Theilmann). Afterwards, he was a member of various modern and free jazz formations (amongst others with Bernd Konrad, Hans Koller, Adelhard Roidinger and Jürgen Wuchner). He played in festivals and in the Free Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden at a flugelhorn workshop with Kenny Wheeler, Ian Carr, Harry Beckett and Ack van Rooyen and makes a name for himself with his solo record the Philpsophy of the flugelhorn (1973). Also, he lead his own wind players trio, quartet and orchestra. He achieved more recognition in 80s as a member of Vienna Art Orchestra. Since 90s he has participated with the SüdPool-Projekt. Also he has appeared in a duet with Frank Kuruc as well as in Patrick Bebelaar's groups or for Michel Godard, Wolfgang Puschnig, Clemens Salesny and Peter Schindler.
