Henry L. Florence


Henry L. Florence (1843-1916) was an architect and member of RIBA.

Florence was an architect based in London and worked in practices with Lewis Henry Isaacs and Herbert Arnold Satchell. His many personal works include the Woolland Brothers department store in Knightsbridge; the Victoria Memorial in Kensington; The Stourbridge and Kidderminster Bank, Worcester and Electric Railway House, previous home of London Transport.

Florence and Isaacs were employed to complete the work of Charles J. Phipps on the Carlton Hotel, London and Her Majesty's Theatre after his death.

Florence died in 1916, and in his will provision was made to set up the Henry L. Florence Studentship's Fund, which is run by The Architectural Association. Research scholars with the fund have included Scottish architect Geoffrey Copcutt. He also made several bequests to the Victoria & Albert Museum, including a vase made by Baccarat, and to The National Gallery.

Florence Hall, part of the RIBA building was named after Henry L.Florence after a bequest from relative HSE van der Plant.
