Henry Charles Gage, 5th Viscount Gage


Henry Charles Gage, 5th Viscount Gage (2 April 1854 – 18 April 1912) was Viscount Gage of Firle Place during the early 20th century.

Gage inherited Firle from Sir Henry Hall (his grandfather) in 1877. His grandparents had extensive roots in British North America as descendants from the Schuyler family, the Delancey family, and the Van Cortlandt family.

He was engaged to the musician, Violet Gordon-Woodhouse, but she broke it off when human sexuality was explained to her. He married Leila Peel in 1894.

He commissioned major alterations and renovations of Firle Place by Billy Freeman Thomas. Gage had a new staircase and garden terraces installed at the manor for his wife to entertain nobility and royalty.

He was the son of Hon. Henry Edward Hall Gage (9 January 1814 – 8 September 1875), and Sophia Selena Knightley. He married Leila Georgina Peel; they had four children:
