Hempstead is a village and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England.
The village is 7 miles (11 km) east from Saffron Walden and 6 miles (10km) west from Haverhill. Hempstead is situated on the B1054 Saffron Walden to Steeple Bumpstead road. The nearest village is Great Sampford, 1.5 miles (2 km) to the south. The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 451.
The village is the burial place of William Harvey, who discovered the circulation of blood, and the birthplace of Dick Turpin, who was reputedly born at the village's Bluebell Inn.
