Hell in a Cell (2016) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and WWE Network event produced by WWE for the Raw brand. It took place on October 30, 2016 at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. It was the eighth event under the Hell in a Cell chronology.

Eight matches were contested at the event, including one on the pre-show. WWE promoted three matches as the main event: Roman Reigns defeated Rusev in a Hell in a Cell for the WWE United States Championship, Kevin Owens defeated Seth Rollins in a Hell in a Cell match to retain the WWE Universal Championship, and Charlotte defeated Sasha Banks in the first ever female Hell in a Cell match to capture the Raw Women's Championship. It also became the first WWE pay-per-view to have a women's match as the main event.

The card included eight matches resulting from scripted storylines and had results predetermined by WWE on the Raw brand, one of WWE's two brand divisions. Storylines were produced on WWE's weekly television show Raw.

At Clash of Champions, Charlotte defeated Sasha Banks and Bayley to retain the Raw Women's Championship. On the October 3 episode of Raw, after Bayley took out Charlotte's protégé, Dana Brooke, backstage, Sasha defeated Charlotte by submission to become a two-time champion. A rematch was scheduled for Hell in a Cell, and on the October 10 episode of Raw, Sasha challenged Charlotte to a Hell in a Cell match, which Charlotte accepted. This was later confirmed by Mick Foley, making this the first women's Hell in a Cell match.
