Harry Payne Bingham


Harry Payne Bingham (1887-1955) was an American financier and philanthropist. He funded a series of expeditions to study marine life.

He was born in 1887 to wealthy Cleveland industrialists Charles W. Bingham and Mary Payne.

In the 1920s he led a series of expeditions on his private yacht that included biologist Albert Eide Parr and natural history illustrator Wilfrid Swancourt Bronson brought specimens and illustrations of marine life to the collections of the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University.

He died in 1955.

His mother's brother Oliver H. Payne died without children, leaving his Hudson River estate to Harry Payne Bingham.
