Goddess Vishalakshi (Bishalakshi) is another name of Goddess Durga. The name "Bishalakshi" is formed by the combination of the words "Vishal" (very big) and "Akshi" (eyes) and thus means "She Who possesses very big eyes".
Among the Hindu religious scriptures, there is reference to Goddess Vishalakshi is Adya Strotram, a popular strotra (verses) said to be divinely revealed to Sri Annada Thakur, the founder of Dakshineswar Ramkrishna Sangha Adyapeath (Adyapeath).
The most famous Vishalakshi temple in India is located at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The temple is regarded as a Shakti Pitha by the Hindus and it is said that the earrings of goddess Sati had fallen here.
