2016 Umaglesi Liga |
The Umaglesi Liga (Georgian: უმაღლესი ლიგა - lit. Highest League) is the top division of professional football in Georgia. Since 1990, it has been organized by the Professional Football League of Georgia and Georgian Football Federation. From 1927 to 1989, the competition was held as a regional tournament within the Soviet Union. The league consists of 16 teams. From 2017 Georgia is switching to Spring-Autumn system, with only 10 clubs in the top flight, which requires holding a transitional championship from August to December 2016. 14 teams will be divided into two groups of 7 and two winners of each group will decide the champion in a one-game match. The best five teams from each group will qualify for the next Spring-Autumn championship's top flight.
