Gemma New


Gemma New (born 1986/1987) is a New Zealand-born music director and conductor. In 2016 she is the director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in Ontario, Canada.

New was born in New Zealand into a musical family. She studied violin beginning at the age of five, and began taking piano lessons at age eight. By twelve she was playing in a youth orchestra in her home city, Wellington.

She graduated from the University of Canterbury with a degree in physics and violin performance. She conducted the Christchurch Youth Orchestra, later earned a graduate degree in music from Baltimore, Maryland's Peabody Institute.

New founded and directed the Maryland music collective Lunar Ensemble. She was the 2014 Dudamel Conducting Fellow, which led her to conduct eight concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. New took on the role of associate conductor at the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, for which she conducted summer outdoor concerts.

In May 2015, New was hired as the music director for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Its first performance under her direction was in February 2016.

In 2016 New was appointed conductor-in-residence of the St. Louis Symphony.
