Gaydar is one of the world’s busiest online dating and social platforms for gay and bisexual men over the age of 18. The first of it’s kind, the Gaydar website (built initially for desktop only) was created in 1999 as a tool to connect gay and bisexual men all over the world for friendships, hook-up, dating and relationships. In 2009, Gaydar expanded into the app market, releasing its iOS and Android app available to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Gaydar is free to join. Individuals create a personal ‘member’ profile which is then used to interact and contact other registered Gaydar members online.

It was founded in 1999 in Cape Town, South Africa by London-based South Africans Gary Frisch and his partner Henry Badenhorst, after a friend complained that he was too busy to look for a new boyfriend.

The initial idea was based upon a then current concept of a corporate intranet that was in development under the codename "RADAR" (Rapid Access And Deployment Resource) for a prominent South African Advertising Conglomerate by programmers Ian Van Schalkwyk and Stephen Hadden. The site was launched in November 1999.

In 2017, Gaydar relaunched its site, app and brand. The updated Gaydar site, as with the evolution of technology has been designed and built to fit all screens, making it now accessible for guys to sign in to their Gaydar profiles on desktop, mobile and tablet devices. It creates a fresh and updated experience for the Gaydar user, allowing Gaydar to further innovate and add further features and functionality to the site to help its members find their match and connect with other gay and bisexual men all over the world better and faster than before.

Unfortunately, this app was a poor imitation of the original website and was released without proper testing. Paying members could not access what they had paid for and the lack of functionality for non-paying members rendered the app useless. The main screen, now called "the grid" shows nearby members. This alone shows how the app / site had become the Marie Celeste of gay apps, with regular users having deleted and long-dead profiles now populating the screen. Gaydar never used to delete old, unused profiles, presumably to keeps the numbers up. The reviews on both Android Play Store ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.qsoft.gaydar ) and Itunes show just how much of a failure this "fresh and updated" experience has been. The majority of reviews now leave just one star.

Gaydar remains one of the most downloaded social and dating apps, with a 1 million+ download status on Android. Gaydar’s global membership base is concentrated mainly in United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and now focussed on growing its audience internationally with
