GMA Balita was the first-ever Filipino newscast of GMA Network and was first aired as an evening newscast on May 19, 1986. It replaced News at Seven as the network's flagship news program, and was originally anchored by Mike Lacanilao, Rene Jose and Helen Vela (who transferred from the sequestered BBC 2, where they anchored City 2 Balita together with Lee Andres).
On January 1995, the newscast was moved to weekdays at 6:30 a.m. and it was reformatted as a morning news program. It served as pre-programming to the network's morning shows, Business Today and later, Good Morning Asia. The newscast finally aired its final episode on April 8, 1998 for the Holy Week special and was replaced by Mornings @ GMA.
