GLASL was originally the Southern California soccer league founded in 1903 and was later renamed the Greater Los Angeles Soccer League known as the GLASL. All league games were played at Jackie Robinson Field located in the West Los Angeles area. There is a misconception in soccer fandom that soccer has been around in this country since the establishment of the MLS and NASL. The GLASL league was dominated by ethnic based teams such as the Yugoslavs, Armenians, Italians, Israelis, Scotts and Croatians. The LA Scotts won the GLSAL titles in 1950,1952,1954. In 1955 they lost to the Danish Americans in the US Open Cup Finals. The most successful club was Jewish oriented Maccabi Los Angeles because of winning the National Challenge Cup (US Open Cup) five times in 1973,1975,1977,1978 and 1981. They were also finalists in 1980 and 1982. They appeared in the Open Cup final seven times in their 11 year history. Maccabi Los Angeles was the standard bearer in the era when MLS and NASL weren't in the picture. The league is still in existence at this time with ethnic teams as a semi-professional league.
