Futurity (horse show)

A horse show futurity is a type of horse show competition reserved specifically for young horses. Futurities are common in the cutting, barrel racing, and reining disciplines.

To compete in most futurities, a horse must be entered in the specific competition before or shortly after birth. It may only compete against other young horses of the same approximate age. Younger horses are shown in hand, but those two or three years of age are more often ridden.

The National Reining Horse Association holds a large futurity every year, as does the National Cutting Horse Association.
