Freedom Campaign

The Freedom Campaign is a joint venture of the Human Rights Action Center and US Campaign for Burma non-profit organizations. The Freedom Campaign is focused on the advocacy and empowerment of individuals whose lives are shining testaments to peace and human rights. Nobel Peace Prize recipient Archbishop Desmond Tutu is an honorary chair, as was former Czech Republic president Václav Havel.

By building awareness of global peacemakers, and bringing to light the struggles that hinder their efforts, the Freedom Campaign assists in spreading their message globally and overturning their censorship.

The Freedom Campaign formerly focused on drawing worldwide attention to Aung San Suu Kyi, the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and the struggles of the people living in Burma. Through music, film and art projects, the campaign aimed to give voice to Suu Kyi's message of human rights.

Through music, film, art, and various entertainment mediums, the Freedom Campaign is building human rights awareness one project at a time. To date, current projects include:

• Documentary Film (Summer 2007), "Freedom from Fear", narrated by Academy Award winning actress Anjelica Huston, the film explores the life of Aung San Suu Kyi and the struggles of the people in Burma. When complete, the film will be submitted to various film festivals in hopes of gaining more awareness. The film will also be screened secretly inside Burma and broadcast via satellite into the authoritarian ruled country.

• Concert Series to raise awareness of Aung San Suu Kyi and human rights violations in Burma. Entertainment will include well-known talent both nationally and internationally. Past music events have included R.E.M., The Black Eyed Peas, Damien Rice, and Wynton Marsalis.

• Freedom Campaign Awards Dinner & Fundraising Gala to honor human rights activists and advocates over the past 25 years who have made an invaluable impact on the world, and to raise awareness of current Freedom Campaign issues. Set for December 10, Human Rights Day, and the 59th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
