Free is a pop rock song performed by British singer and actress Dani Harmer. The song was released for digital download on 22 May 2009 as the lead single from Harmer's debut album, Superheroes. Despite excessive promotion, the song was deemed unsuccessful and failed to chart well, entering below 115. An acoustic version of "Free" was released the day after the single was on iTunes for paid download.
The song was originally recorded by singer-songwriter Amy Pearson under the title "Breaking Free" and was made a B-side on her debut single Don't Miss You which was released in June 2007.
In 2008 Harmer signed a record deal with record label Universal/Decca worth £3 million. Free is also the theme tune to the television serial Dani's House, which stars Harmer as Dani. She has appeared on Newsround and CBBC to talk about the single. Free was written by Klaus Derendorf, Tom Nichols, and Amy Pearson. Tom Nichols is best known for his songwriting for successful artists such as Kylie Minogue and S Club 7.
Despite much publicity and promotion, the single failed to chart well. On the iTunes Singles Chart it gained a position of 117 and this was later the same position in the official chart.
The style has been compared to that of singers-actresses Miley Cyrus and Hilary Duff, and a mix of rock and pop."We're both actors, we're both singers...but we're really quite different. I'm quite a lot older than Miley. But I love her music! She's absolutely wicked, but I'm doing it for Britain!" Harmer stated on the CBBC show Newsround.
