Fred Waring Jr.


Fredrick Malcolm Waring Jr. (born June 23, 1936, in New York City) is an American jazz trombonist and son of bandleader Fred Waring.

Waring was self-taught on trombone by the age of thirteen. When he was nineteen, he toured with his father's band, the Pennsylvanians.

Waring studied at Pennsylvania State University and at Indiana University. His education was interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy, where he played trombone in the Navy band. He toured with Woody Herman, then worked for the Jackie Gleason show. He toured with the Broadway musical Hair and served as musical director in London, Copenhagen, Montreal and Washington D.C.

During the 1980s, he was in charge of Shawnee Press, his father's music publising business.
